My first major experience of Twitter was on 26/11/2008 when Mumbai was under attack.
I had absolutely no idea that so many people would end up using Twitter for news update on Mumbai. It was only after the dust had settled down that I realized that even if unknowingly I had been part of a record number of users searching as well as tweeting on #Mumbai (learnt about #hashtag then). Was it a coincidence? I don't think so! I was doing what seemed natural to me and I believe so did many new users tweeting #Mumbai that fateful night. I was simply part of the herd that was being driven by trends, especially the Social Web trends.
This event made me realize why Twitter is such a raging phenomenon. It has taken information sharing to a new level bordering on almost promiscuity. In the next post I will discuss the ways Twitter has been useful.
